Detailed Itinerary

Day 1-3 Arrival Nairobi, Fly Meru National Park

On arrival into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be transferred to Wilson Airport for your flight to Meru, from where you will be transferred to Elsa’s Kopje. View rhino in their natural habitat from the comfort of your cottage, each uniquely designed and with spectacular views. Elsa’s Kopje also boasts an open bar, lounge and dining room with an infinity pool overlooking the Meru plains. Other major attractions include Mount Kenya, Tana River, Adamsons’s falls and rivers and riverine habitats.

Meru National Park is noted for its fauna and natural beauty. It has many swamps and rivers lined with palms, as well as mountains and woodlands, and it is the setting for Joy Adamson’s book “Born Free”, which was later made into a successful film. The park is home to a large pride of lions, herds of buffalo, and hippos and crocodiles that live in the rivers. At Meru, you will find excellent views of snow-capped Mount Kenya and the park’s beautiful landscape is a camper’s paradise. The roads are suitable for vehicles and there are many rocky outcrops that provide great lookout points for the abundant Kenyan animals.

Game viewing is excellent and includes four of the “Big Five” -elephants, lions, leopards and buffalo – as well as cheetahs, antelope, hippos and crocodiles. The roads are well graded and Meru National Park is quieter than some of the other parks. Meals and Accommodation: Elsa Kopje

Days 4-6 Mathews Ranges, Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy

Depart from Elsa’s Kopje in the morning to Mathew’s Range. Whilst there, you will stay at Sarara Camp, located within the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust, the home of the Samburu people. The wilderness country here is very much unspoilt with limited network of tracks, to enhance the experience. The emphasis is therefore on walking safaris, which you can discover with excellent local Samburu guides.

In the northern frontier of Kenya lies the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, an area of 850,000 acres of pristine wilderness in the Mathews Range. The savannah plains and lush mountain slopes are home to elephant, leopard, reticulated giraffe, wild dog and kudu in ever increasing numbers. This remote and dramatic landscape is also home to the local Samburu people whose age-old traditions, including the famed ‘singing wells’ are as much a part of the fabric of this land as the wildlife.

On the edge of an escarpment in the heart of the conservancy sits Sarara. The secluded camp consists of only 6 luxurious double tents spread out along the hillside with open air bathrooms to make the most of the exceptional vistas and fully benefit from the hot climate. The team of resident chefs lovingly create delicious, home-cooked meals which can be enjoyed in the bush or in the comfort of the camp’s surroundings. I can’t imagine a more gracious setting for our three days here. Sarara is the perfect combination of rugged terrain and adventure coupled with elegance and relaxation. Featured Accommodation

Elsa Kopje

Meru National Park
Unashamedly romantic and beautifully styled, Elsa’s Kopje is sculpted into Mughwango Hill, above the site of George Adamson’s original camp where he raised and released orphan lions, long before conservation became fashionable.

Guests can enjoy inimitable seclusion in the vast expanse of Elsa’s Kopje, boasting 870km² , the equivalent of 215,000 acres, of authentic African landscape. The park offers a thriving rhino sanctuary, and is famous for large elephant herds, hippo, lion, and birdlife; Meru National Park is recognised as having more diversity of animal species than any other park in East Africa.

The rugged and remote Meru National Park was rescued from oblivion thanks to Elsa’s Kopje, an environmental award-winning, boutique lodge. Winner of the Good Safari Guide’s ‘Best Safari Property in Africa’ award, Elsa’s Kopje is widely renowned as one of the most elegant lodges in Africa.
